Demonta Hunter was 29 and lived in East St. Louis. Someone shot him near the corner of North 24th Street and Missouri Avenue. He was pronounced dead shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday.
The St. Clair County Coroner’s Office named him as one of two men killed in separate weekend shootings. Hunter’s case is being handled by East St. Louis police with help from Illinois State Police.

Earlier that same morning another shooting claimed a life in Washington Park. Eric L. Swearengen Jr., 22, from St. Louis, was shot in the 1500 block of North 46th Street. He died early Sunday.
State police are assisting both departments. Washington Park police are looking into Swearengen’s death. East St. Louis police are focused on Hunter’s.
No extra details have come out about either incident. Investigators are still piecing together the circumstances. Both cases stay open and active.
Two young men from the area are gone after one weekend of gunfire. Hunter died close to home in East St. Louis. Swearengen was killed just across the way in Washington Park.
