Lamont Dunlap, 41, was found dead inside a Wilkinsburg home Monday afternoon alongside 31-year-old Lamara Baldwin. The discovery ended days of silence at the property and opened a death investigation that has left police looking for answers.
When Wilkinsburg police officers entered the residence on the 1100 block of Franklin Avenue, they found both adults unresponsive. Investigators inspected the scene carefully and reported no visible injuries, marks, or signs of a struggle on either person.
Detectives believe Dunlap and Baldwin likely died around Friday. That timeline means the house stood quiet through the entire weekend while no one came or went from the property.
Inside the home, officers found Dunlap and Baldwin’s two young daughters, ages 3 and 1, alive. The toddlers had somehow managed to get through several days on their own in the house without any adult care.
Police had originally traveled to the Franklin Avenue neighborhood after getting a call to check on the welfare of the adults inside. First responders acted quickly the moment they realized two small children were still in the building.
First responders carried the two sisters out to waiting ambulances. Medics transported both girls to a nearby hospital for emergency evaluation to check their vital signs and overall health.
After doctors evaluated and released the children, county welfare officials took charge of their care. Allegheny County Children, Youth and Families placed the sisters in custody while county medical examiners conduct toxicology screens to determine what killed Dunlap and Baldwin.
