Virginia State Police troopers are investigating whether alcohol played a role in a single-vehicle crash that claimed a passenger’s life over the weekend. The wreck left a pickup truck overturned on the far side of a ditch off Butterwood Road.
The incident happened on Sunday, August 2, in the 20000 block of Butterwood Road in Dinwiddie County. State police officers were dispatched to the scene following reports that a truck had left the road.
According to investigators, a 1997 Dodge pickup truck was driving westbound on Butterwood Road when it drifted off the left shoulder. The vehicle then struck a concrete culvert along the side of the road.
The pickup kept moving forward after hitting the culvert, cutting through an adjacent field. It continued until it hit a small ravine, where the truck rolled over and landed on the opposite embankment.
The passenger, identified by loved ones as 33-year-old Heather Rose, was partially ejected during the rollover. She remained trapped inside the crumpled truck frame while emergency workers responded.
Firefighters extricated Rose from the wreckage, and emergency medical personnel transported her to a local hospital in critical condition. Doctors worked to save her, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
State police confirmed that neither person inside the pickup was believed to be wearing a seat belt during the crash. The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the rollover.
