A 40-year-old State College man lost his life early Tuesday morning after a violent two-vehicle crash on Interstate 99 in Blair County. Friends and family are left grieving Joshua Russell Brown, who died at the scene from severe injuries sustained in the collision.
Emergency crews got the call around 12:50 a.m. Responders rushed out to the southbound lanes near mile marker 42.6, where they found the chaotic scene. The Blair County Coroner’s Office arrived shortly after and officially pronounced Brown dead at the location.
State highway monitoring service 511PA noted that the wreck happened just minutes before 1:00 a.m. Traffic ground to a halt as state troopers and first responders shut down part of the interstate to manage the wreckage and begin sorting out what happened.
Footage captured by local news crews at the scene showed emergency personnel working under bright floodlights around a severely damaged tractor-trailer. The heavy rig blocked the road, turning the stretch of highway into an active recovery zone for hours.
Clearing the highway turned into a massive effort for local crews. Firefighters with the Excelsior Fire Company had to physically unload cargo from inside the damaged semi before heavy tow trucks could move the rig off the asphalt.
State police have not yet released details about the driver of the second vehicle involved or whether anyone else suffered injuries. Investigators are still looking at weather conditions, potential mechanical issues, vehicle damage patterns, and road conditions to piece together the sequence of events.
For now, officials are asking anyone who drove through that stretch of Interstate 99 around midnight to speak up if they saw anything. The Blair County Coroner’s Office and law enforcement say their investigation remains wide open as they try to give Brown’s loved ones some answers.
