Late Saturday night was supposed to be just another quiet weekend ride across Long Island. But for 42-year-old Herson Almonte, a routine trip along Nesconset Highway ended in absolute heartbreak before the night was over.
Almonte, a resident of Port Jefferson Station, was cruising eastbound on his 2026 Kawasaki motorcycle around 12:30 a.m. The roads were mostly empty, and the night was calm as he headed past the intersection at Nicolls Road.
The quiet town of Lake Grove sits in Suffolk County, just a few miles near South Setauket in the Town of Brookhaven. Located about 55 miles east of Manhattan, it is the kind of peaceful suburb where late-night traffic is usually light and predictable.
In a sudden and tragic turn of events, Almonte lost control of his motorcycle just east of Nicolls Road. The bike veered off course and struck the center divider of the highway with devastating force.
First responders rushed to the crash site immediately after receiving emergency calls. Paramedics worked quickly on scene to stabilize Almonte before rushing him to Stony Brook University Hospital for emergency treatment.
Despite the best efforts of medical staff at the hospital, the injuries from the high-impact collision proved far too severe. Almonte was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical center, leaving family and friends grieving a loss that happened in a split second.
Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are currently investigating what caused Almonte to lose control of his bike. As part of standard procedure, authorities impounded the Kawasaki for a full safety inspection while asking anyone with information to contact investigators at 631-854-8652.
