It was supposed to be just another routine Thursday evening drive down Mississippi’s Highway 42. But in a split second, a horrific two-vehicle crash turned a quiet highway into a scene of unimaginable tragedy, cutting short the life of a beloved community member.
Hollis Douglas, a 50-year-old resident of Sumrall, was driving his 2018 Ford F-250 pickup truck eastbound around 7:47 p.m. He was not alone in the truck that evening, traveling alongside a passenger as they made their way down the stretch of road in Jefferson Davis County.
Without warning, a 2005 Toyota Camry traveling westbound collided directly with Douglas’ pickup truck. The impact was violent and severe, crushing metal and bringing both vehicles to a sudden, devastating stop on the blacktop.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after getting the call, working feverishly to evaluate the victims amidst the twisted wreckage. Tragically, there was nothing medics could do to save Douglas, and he was pronounced dead right at the scene by the Jefferson Davis County Coroner’s Office.
The passenger riding in the truck with Douglas survived the initial collision but suffered moderate injuries. First responders quickly transported them to a nearby hospital for medical care, though officials have not yet released an update on their current recovery status.
As first responders tended to the victims, the driver of the Toyota Camry was nowhere to be found. Authorities identified the driver as 42-year-old Dantirrean Smith of Brookhaven, who immediately fled the crash scene on foot before state troopers arrived.
Smith later walked into the Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s Office on his own accord and turned himself in to law enforcement. As the Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to piece together the exact details of what happened, family and friends in Sumrall are left clinging to fond memories of Hollis Douglas, a life taken far too soon.
