A fatal nighttime crash on Highway 42 has triggered an intense ongoing investigation, focusing on the actions of a Brookhaven driver who fled the scene before turning himself over to county authorities.
Dantirrean Smith, 42, was behind the wheel of a 2005 Toyota Camry heading west through Jefferson Davis County around 7:47 p.m. on Thursday evening. What started as an ordinary trip quickly spiraled into a fatal disaster on the dark roadway.
Smith’s Camry crossed paths with an oncoming 2018 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by 50-year-old Hollis Douglas of Sumrall. The two vehicles collided with immense force, leaving both automobiles wrecked in the middle of the highway.
Immediately following the heavy impact, Smith made the decision to leave the crash site right away. He departed the area before emergency crews or law enforcement officers could arrive at the scene to render aid.
While state troopers began investigating the wreckage, Smith eventually changed course. He voluntarily walked into the Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s Office and surrendered himself to local deputies for questioning.
The tragic fallout of the collision was devastating. Hollis Douglas suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner, while a passenger in Douglas’ truck was rushed to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
State investigators with the Mississippi Highway Patrol are still working to determine what caused Smith’s car to collide with the pickup truck. Officials have held off on announcing formal charges against Smith while troopers gather evidence and ask any witnesses to step forward.
