Suffolk County detectives are trying to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to a fatal late-night crash over the weekend. What began as a normal drive turned into a deadly scene along a major Long Island roadway.
The victim has been identified as 42-year-old Herson Almonte from nearby Port Jefferson Station. Investigators say Almonte was operating a 2026 Kawasaki motorcycle eastbound along Nesconset Highway when trouble struck.
The collision took place around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, just east of Nicolls Road in the suburb of Lake Grove. The area sits inside the Town of Brookhaven, about 55 miles east of New York City and right next to South Setauket.
According to preliminary findings from the Sixth Squad detectives, Almonte lost control of his motorcycle suddenly. The bike drifted toward the middle of the roadway and crashed straight into the concrete center divider.
Police confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the accident. Emergency crews arrived quickly, securing the roadway and transporting Almonte directly to Stony Brook University Hospital, where medical workers later declared him dead.
In the aftermath of the crash, officers impounded the 2026 Kawasaki to perform a routine safety and mechanical inspection. Detectives want to ensure there were no mechanical failures or unexpected vehicle defects that contributed to the loss of control.
The investigation into the tragic incident remains active as police look into all potential factors. Suffolk County Police are urging any witnesses who were driving near Nesconset Highway around midnight to call Sixth Squad detectives at 631-854-8652.
