Investigators with the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office are piecing together the events that led to a fatal e-bike crash in the Town of Merrimac on July 22. Emergency dispatchers first picked up a distress call at 11:17 a.m. reporting a rider down along Idlewild Road. The victim, later identified as 68-year-old local resident Andrea Gibson, suffered deadly injuries when her electric bike slammed into a nearby building.
Deputies arriving at the scene found that Gibson had been traveling southbound on Idlewild Road near Albrite Drive. She was heading down a sloped hill when the bike began picking up significant momentum. Investigators are currently focused on determining why she was unable to check her speed or keep the bike on the asphalt.
A key witness interviewed by law enforcement gave deputies a clear account of the moments leading up to the impact. The witness observed Gibson riding at a high rate of speed on the downhill run. Right before the e-bike veered off the asphalt, the witness heard her shout out, suggesting she had lost steering control or suffered a sudden mechanical failure.
The runaway bike left the travel lane and struck a shed on a nearby residential property. Bystanders who saw the crash immediately ran over to provide aid and called 911. They reported that Gibson had suffered significant torso lacerations and severe head trauma despite wearing a safety helmet during the ride.
By the time emergency medical units reached the site on Idlewild Road, Gibson had slipped into unconsciousness. Recognizing the grave nature of her injuries, first responders requested immediate assistance from UW MedFlight. Paramedics stabilized her at the crash site before loading her onto the helicopter for transport to a Madison trauma center.
Despite aggressive medical intervention by flight crews and hospital physicians in Madison, Gibson died from her injuries. The Sauk County Coroner’s Office and sheriff’s deputies are continuing their work to determine the formal cause of death and catalog the full extent of the crash impact.
Captain Matt Burch of the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office indicated that the investigation into the fatality remains open and active. Law enforcement officers are inspecting the electric bicycle to check for brake failure, throttle stickiness, or other mechanical defects. They are also examining the road surface for gravel, potholes, or debris that might have compromised traction.
Authorities have not ruled out rider inexperience or sudden physical distress as potential factors in the crash. As deputies wait on mechanical test results, they are urging anyone who was traveling near Idlewild Road and Albrite Drive around 11:15 a.m. on July 22 to come forward with any extra details.
