Friday night started out like any other late summer evening in south-central Texas. Down on the South Side of San Antonio, the traffic near Roosevelt Avenue and Loop 410 was moving along at its usual steady pace. But around 8:30 p.m., a routine drive turned into an absolute nightmare on the asphalt.
Luis Martinez, a 63-year-old local resident, was behind the wheel of his car. For reasons investigators are still trying to figure out, Martinez made a disastrous wrong turn. He ended up driving northbound directly inside the southbound lanes of Roosevelt Avenue, heading straight into oncoming traffic.
Police reports noted that Martinez showed clear signs of intoxication after the collision occurred. Driving down the wrong side of a busy street while impaired is every driver’s worst nightmare. In those dark hours right near the heavily traveled Loop 410 interchange, there was virtually zero margin for error.
As Martinez kept driving up the wrong side of the road, another vehicle was cruising southbound in its rightful lane. The driver ahead caught sight of headlights coming straight at them. Panic set in, and that driver made a quick, split-second decision to yank the steering wheel into the next lane to get out of harm’s way.
Then came the cruelest twist of fate imaginable. At the exact same second the oncoming driver swerved to avoid a crash, Martinez also turned his steering wheel into that very same lane. Both drivers were just trying to save themselves, but they ended up swerving right into each other’s path.
The two cars slammed head-on into each other with heavy force in the middle of Roosevelt Avenue. Paramedics rushed to the scene and pulled Martinez from the wreckage. At first, officers thought his injuries were non-life-threatening, and he was quickly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Sadly, things took a turn for the worse behind hospital doors. Just seven hours after the crash, Martinez succumbed to his internal injuries and passed away. San Antonio police officers are still investigating every detail of the accident, leaving a family grieving and a city reminded of how fast one bad night can turn fatal.
