San Antonio police traffic investigators are piecing together the events surrounding a fatal two-vehicle collision that shut down a far North Side intersection on Monday morning. The crash left a local woman dead and sent a teenage driver to the hospital.
The incident unfolded right around 11 a.m. at the busy crossing of Hardy Oak Boulevard and Sable Canyon. Officers arrived to find two heavily damaged vehicles blocking the roadway and traffic completely halted in both directions.
Preliminary findings from investigators show that 64-year-old Valerie Keeney was trying to pull out from Sable Canyon to join southbound traffic on Hardy Oak Boulevard. Police stated that Keeney did not stop at the posted stop sign before moving into the travel lane.
A northbound car driven by a teenager was traveling along Hardy Oak Boulevard at the same time. With no time to avoid the vehicle entering the lane, the teen’s car broadsided Keeney’s vehicle near the driver’s door.
Emergency crews arrived to find Keeney trapped in the driver’s seat of her vehicle. Firefighters used specialized tools to cut through the door and extricate her, handing her over to waiting paramedics who immediately initiated CPR.
Keeney was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The teenage driver survived the impact and was transported by EMS to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office and San Antonio Police Department continue to review physical evidence from the crash scene. Authorities have not released further details as the official investigation remains open.
