Hinds County sheriff’s deputies are working to piece together what happened during a fatal single-vehicle crash near Raymond over the weekend. The investigation began as a routine missing person case on Saturday and ended Sunday night with a discovery off Dry Grove Road.
The timeline started on Saturday, August 1, when 20-year-old Nolanion Cantrell Thompson was last spotted near the 11520 block of Tank Road. He was driving a gray 2018 Nissan Maxima with Mississippi license plate 919HNV. When family members could not get ahold of him, they contacted law enforcement for help.
Sheriff Tyree Jones and his office put out a missing person alert to the public later that weekend. Deputies began patrolling nearby corridors and checking areas where Thompson frequently traveled, asking anyone with information to call in immediately.
The break in the case came Sunday evening, August 3. A deputy driving along Dry Grove Road noticed signs of a vehicle leaving the main road near a wooded area. Upon closer inspection, officers found Thompson’s Nissan buried in the brush.
According to crash investigators, the sedan had drifted off the roadway and collided directly with a large tree. The impact caused severe structural damage to the front of the car, keeping it hidden in the dense treeline away from passing traffic.
Deputies called in emergency medical services, but Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Jones confirmed his identity shortly after notifying the next of kin, officially closing the missing person report.
Accident reconstruction teams remain on the scene to figure out why the vehicle went off the road. Investigators are reviewing roadway conditions and the timing of the crash to give Thompson’s family clear answers about his final moments.
