State troopers in Terrebonne Parish are working to figure out what caused a devastating head-on collision that claimed a life late Friday afternoon. The crash took place on July 31 on Bayou Gardens Boulevard Extension, near the intersection of Louisiana Highway 660. Investigators from Louisiana State Police Troop C were called to the scene just before 5:00 p.m. to inspect the wreckage.

At the heart of the tragic scene was 58-year-old Timothy Brewer, a resident of nearby Houma. Brewer was driving west down the boulevard in a 2015 Kia Optima. Traffic was moving steadily along the route as the weekend commute began, but within seconds, the routine drive took a fatal turn.

According to preliminary findings from state police, Brewer’s Kia suddenly crossed over the center divider line. For reasons investigators are still trying to determine, the sedan entered the eastbound lane directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Cruising in that eastbound lane was a 2022 Honda CR-V. The driver of the Honda had virtually no room to maneuver before the Kia struck the SUV head-on. The force of the impact brought both vehicles to a sudden halt, blocking the roadway as debris scattered across the asphalt.

When first responders arrived, they found Brewer trapped inside his vehicle. State police reported that Brewer was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. Due to the severity of the head-on impact, he sustained catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.

In contrast, the driver of the Honda CR-V was properly buckled up when the collision occurred. That seatbelt likely saved their life, though the driver still suffered moderate injuries from the violent crash. Emergency crews stabilized the Honda driver at the scene before transport to an out-of-area hospital for treatment.

Trooper investigators collected routine toxicology samples from both drivers, which is standard protocol in all fatal crash investigations in Louisiana. As state police await those lab results to determine if impairment, fatigue, or distraction played a role, the Houma community continues to mourn the loss of Timothy Brewer while searching for answers.
