A normal graveyard shift took a tragic turn early Saturday morning when a patrolling police officer came across a house fully engulfed in flames. Officer Chris Vecchi was driving down Bennett Street around 5:49 a.m. when he spotted thick smoke cutting through the quiet morning air at 264 Bennett Street in Luzerne Borough.
Officer Vecchi moved without waiting for backup. He immediately rushed to the burning building to alert the sleeping family inside. Seeing how fast the flames were spreading across the front structure, he also ran to the adjacent homes, pounding on doors to evacuate two neighboring households before the fire could jump to nearby roofs.
Despite the quick actions on the ground, the fire had already taken a heavy toll inside the residence. Inside the home was 15-year-old Connor Vest, who tragically did not survive the fire. Luzerne County Coroner Dion Fernandes confirmed Connor’s death later that morning, noting the painful detail that Saturday was the young man’s 15th birthday.
Three other occupants of the home suffered serious injuries during the incident. Emergency medical teams worked quickly on scene before transporting all three surviving residents to local trauma units. A pet living inside the house also perished in the blaze before firefighters could pull it out.
Dispatch teams at Luzerne County 911 Communications coordinated a fast multi-agency response to back up Officer Vecchi. Teams from the Luzerne Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the block alongside multiple nearby departments. Firefighters pulled hose lines and fought the flames directly, keeping the structure fire from completely destroying surrounding properties.
Luzerne Borough Police Chief Dan Duffy commended all the first responders, fire crews, and medical personnel who stepped up during the emergency. He offered condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy, sharing that the entire department and community are standing with the family during this dark time.
The cause of the fire remains under official review. Investigators with the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, along with local police detectives, are staying on scene at Bennett Street to gather evidence and review what happened. An autopsy for Connor Vest has been scheduled by the coroner’s office for Monday to determine the official cause of death.
