A routine traffic backup turned deadly Thursday morning on Interstate 24 near Madison. Police officers spent hours investigating a three-truck collision that tied up westbound traffic and claimed the life of a driver from Clarksville.
The sequence began earlier in the morning near Old Hickory Boulevard. A tractor-trailer had rolled over, forcing emergency crews to block lanes and slow incoming traffic. By 10 a.m., cars and heavy rigs were bumper to bumper along I-24 West.
Madeline Mitchell, 29, was driving a semi-truck westward toward the site of the delay. Traffic ahead had already dropped to a slow crawl. Preliminary findings show Mitchell did not reduce her speed as her truck approached the back of the line.
Her rig struck the rear of a stopped semi-trailer with heavy force. The momentum drove that second truck forward into the back of a third semi-trailer stopped right ahead of it, completing a multi-vehicle pileup.
First responders arrived to find severe front and rear end damage across all three rigs. Mitchell died from the force of the impact before medical help could transport her. The driver in the third truck suffered minor injuries, and the driver in the middle truck was unhurt.
Investigating officers evaluated all drivers on scene and found zero signs of impairment. Crews shut down I-24 West from Old Hickory Boulevard to Whites Creek Pike, redirecting traffic for hours while towing services removed the crushed trucks.
Investigators are still looking into what kept Mitchell from stopping before the impact. For now, police have cleared the highway, leaving behind an ongoing inquiry and a grieving community in Clarksville.
