Friday evenings out in rural Paulding County usually mean folks wrapping up their work week and heading home for a quiet weekend. But for 28-year-old Guadalupe Amaro Martinez II and his 55-year-old passenger, Guadalupe A. Martinez Jr., a routine drive turned into an absolute nightmare. The two Paulding men were out on U.S. Route 127 when everything went wrong in a fraction of a second.
It was just before 6:30 p.m. when the pair were traveling southbound in a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse. The sun was starting to dip, and the open blacktop seemed calm enough. Yet, out near mile marker 8 in Jackson Township, trouble was brewing fast on that quiet stretch of highway.
Investigators with the Ohio State Highway Patrol say Martinez II was behind the wheel as the SUV rolled down the lane. For reasons still being unraveled, the Chevrolet drifted right across the center line. It veered straight into oncoming traffic heading the opposite way.
Coming up northbound was a massive 2024 Dodge Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup. Driven by 56-year-old Judd Charles Spencer of nearby Cecil, the truck was simply cruising along its proper lane. There was practically zero time or space to dodge what came next.
The collision was violent and head-on. The sheer force of the impact crumpled the SUV immediately. When emergency responders rushed to the scene, there was nothing they could do for the two men inside the Traverse. Both Martinez II and Martinez Jr. were pronounced dead right there on the blacktop.
State troopers from the Van Wert Post quickly took charge of the chaotic scene. They brought in help from the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, local firefighters, and Gideon’s Towing to secure the highway. Early findings point to speed as a major factor, though troopers are still digging deep into whether anything else contributed to the tragedy.
For the tight-knit town of Paulding, losing two of their own in one fell swoop is a bitter pill to swallow. Friends and neighbors are left grieving a father and son whose lives ended far too soon on a familiar local road. As the investigation drags on, the community can only wonder how a simple Friday night drive ended in such sudden heartbreak.
