Judd Charles Spencer was just heading up U.S. Route 127 like he probably had done a hundred times before. The 56-year-old Cecil resident was behind the wheel of his heavy-duty 2024 Dodge Ram 3500 on a warm Friday evening. He had no idea he was driving straight into a terrifying, life-altering moment.
It was roughly 6:29 p.m. as Spencer traveled northbound through Jackson Township in Paulding County. The rural highway stretches wide open about 90 miles southwest of Toledo, near the Indiana line. Everything seemed totally routine on that quiet stretch of road near mile marker 8.
Suddenly, the unexpected happened right in front of him. A 2020 Chevrolet Traverse heading south crossed over the center line without warning. The SUV barreled right into Spencer’s lane, leaving virtually no room to steer clear or brake.
The driver of that SUV was 28-year-old Guadalupe Amaro Martinez II, accompanied by 55-year-old passenger Guadalupe A. Martinez Jr. Both were Paulding locals making their way down the highway. In an instant, the two vehicles collided head-on in a brutal crash.
Spencer’s heavy Dodge Ram took the brunt of the head-on hit. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but the scene was grim. The two occupants of the Chevy SUV sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead right at the crash site by officials.
Authorities at the scene did not immediately release details regarding Spencer’s physical condition after the crash. No other passengers were inside his truck or the SUV. First responders from the Paulding Fire Department, Sheriff’s deputies, and Gideon’s Towing spent hours working to clear the wreckage and direct traffic.
The Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is heading up the active investigation. Troopers believe speed played a role in why the SUV drifted into Spencer’s path, but they are still checking for distraction or other issues. For Spencer and the local community, it is a chilling reminder of how fast a regular drive on a country highway can turn upside down.
