A routine weekend patrol on Long Island turned into an active crash investigation after a fatal midnight wreck left local authorities searching for answers. Detectives are now working around the clock to understand how a single bike crash ended in tragedy.
The crash happened at roughly 1:05 a.m. Saturday along the southbound lanes of William Floyd Parkway in Shoreham. The location sits in Brookhaven Town, roughly an hour drive east of Manhattan, where late-night traffic is usually light and straightforward.
According to Suffolk County Police, 23-year-old Daniel Austin of Mastic Beach was the sole rider on a 2024 Honda motorcycle. Austin was cruising south when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle and was thrown off into the roadway.
First responders arrived within minutes of the call, but the impact of the toss proved too severe. Austin suffered heavy fatal injuries and was declared dead right at the crash site by medical personnel before he could be transported.
Because no other cars or drivers were involved, detectives from the Seventh Squad are focusing heavily on mechanical and road conditions. Police impounded Austin’s 2024 Honda to run full safety checks to see if equipment failure played a role in the sudden loss of control.
This tragedy marked a grim 24 hours for local law enforcement on eastern Long Island. Austin’s death came right on the heels of another single-vehicle motorcycle crash earlier Saturday in nearby Centereach, making it two fatal bike wrecks in the area in a single day.
