Late Saturday night on eastern Long Island, what started as a quiet drive down an open road turned into a sudden, devastating tragedy. A young man with his whole life ahead of him lost his life on a dark stretch of highway, leaving family, friends, and neighbors in total shock.

Daniel Austin was just 23 years old and lived in Mastic Beach, New York. Those who live in the tight-knit coastal hamlet know how young that really is. Daniel had his brand new 2024 Honda motorcycle out on the road, taking advantage of the quiet summer night air.

It was around 1:05 a.m. when Daniel was heading southbound on the William Floyd Parkway. As he rode through Shoreham, a quiet hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven about 60 miles east of Manhattan, something went terribly wrong on the asphalt.

For reasons investigators are still working to figure out, Daniel lost control of his bike. The sudden jerk threw him completely off the motorcycle and onto the roadway. There were no other cars around, making the sudden accident all the more heartbreaking and baffling.

Emergency workers rushed to the scene on the parkway as soon as the call came in. Despite their fast response, there was nothing they could do to save him. Daniel suffered fatal injuries from the throw and was pronounced dead right there on the road.

The news hit the Mastic Beach and Shoreham communities hard. Losing a 23-year-old in a flash reminds everyone how fragile life can be on these fast suburban parkways. Neighbors are mourning a young life cut far too short before it truly got going.

Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are handling the case and trying to give Daniel’s family answers. They impounded his 2024 Honda to run safety checks, and they are urging anyone who was on William Floyd Parkway around 1:05 a.m. to call them at 631-852-8752 with any detail, no matter how small.
