A man is dead and another is hurt after gunfire outside a Charlotte apartment complex early Wednesday. Police say the shots came less than 90 minutes after David Simpson left the Mecklenburg County Jail.
Simpson posted bond around 12:21 a.m. He walked out on a failure to appear charge tied to an earlier case of having a weapon while locked up. By 1:45 a.m. officers were racing to the complex where he lives.
One man never made it. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The second man was wounded but lived. Police have not named either man yet.
Investigators say the trouble started over a parking space. Cops had already been called to the same complex twice earlier that night. The argument kept going.
Surveillance video, according to police, shows Simpson go inside after the dispute. He comes back out carrying a black bag that looked heavy. Moments later the shots ring out. Then he heads back inside with the same bag.
Simpson faces first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and possession of a firearm by a felon. His girlfriend Shameka Scott was arrested too. Police say she helped him run after the shooting. She posted a $30,000 bond and got out.
Simpson has a long record. He was charged with first-degree murder in a 2013 killing, took a deal, and did about five years. More arrests followed once he got out. The case from Wednesday is still open.
