Dylan Daniel Roberts was only 20 when the ocean took him and his father. The pair from Lenoir were in the water near the 1100 block of Ocean Boulevard West when things went wrong Sunday.

Somebody spotted them in distress around 9:43 a.m. and called it in. First responders hit the scene and hauled both men onto the beach. Life support started right away.

It was not enough. Dylan and 46-year-old Daniel Jason Roberts were declared dead where they lay. A son and his dad lost together.

Every agency that could respond showed up. Police, Tri-Beach Fire, county EMS, marine patrol, Civietown Fire, the Coast Guard, and the medical helicopter all worked the call.

The water does not care who you are. Rip currents were strong that morning. The Roberts men found that out the hard way.

Town leaders and the police department said their thoughts are with the family and friends left behind. The loss hits hard for the people who loved them.

One short stretch of beach claimed both. That is what the records show.
