Daniel Jason Roberts and his boy Dylan never made it back to the sand alive Sunday morning. The 46-year-old and his 20-year-old son from Lenoir hit trouble in the water right off the 1100 block of Ocean Boulevard West.
Calls came in at 9:43 a.m. Two people were fighting the waves. Holden Beach officers and the rest of the crew got there fast. They pulled both men out and went straight to work with advanced life support.
Nothing brought them back. Daniel and Dylan were pronounced dead right there on the beach. A father and his son gone in the same stretch of ocean.
Tri-Beach Fire, Brunswick County EMS, the sheriff’s marine patrol, Civietown Fire, the Coast Guard, and the AirLink helicopter all showed up to help. The whole group threw everything they had at the rescue.
Folks in town know how quick the water can turn. High rip currents were in the forecast that morning. Still, nobody expects a dad and his kid to leave the beach that way.
The police and the town put out word they feel for the Roberts family. A hard loss for everyone who knew them back home in Lenoir.
Two lives from the same household ended on the same shore. That is the plain truth of what happened out there.
