Todd Dorn was behind the wheel of his Volkswagen Jetta late Sunday when everything changed near Syracuse. He tried to cross Highway 2 southbound on County Road 36. The Jetta never made it.
A Ford Fusion headed west on Highway 2 had the right of way. Dorn’s car did not stop in time. The two vehicles slammed into each other around 8:30 p.m. east of town.
Otoe County deputies got the call and rolled up on the wreck. They found Dorn hurt bad. Crews rushed him to a local hospital. Doctors worked on him. He did not make it.
The driver of the Ford also went to the hospital. His injuries were minor. He walked away from the same crash that took Todd’s life.
Todd was 62. Folks in Syracuse knew him. Friends and family gathered once the news spread. The loss hit hard in a small Nebraska town where everybody knows somebody.
Sheriff’s office says the crash is still under investigation. No other details have come out yet. Just the basic facts of who failed to yield and who paid the price.
People who knew Todd keep talking about the man he was. The empty seat at the table is what hurts most right now.
