Sunday night traffic on Highway 2 east of Syracuse turned deadly in a hurry. A Ford Fusion rolled westbound with clear right of way. A Volkswagen Jetta pulled out from County Road 36 and cut across its path.

The impact came around 8:30 p.m. Otoe County deputies arrived to find both drivers injured. Todd Dorn, 62, sat behind the wheel of the Jetta. Medics loaded him up and headed for the hospital.

Hospital staff tried everything they could. Todd still died from the injuries he took in the crash. The Ford driver got checked out for minor stuff and was released.

Investigators confirmed the Jetta failed to yield. That one mistake closed the books on a 62-year-old life. The sheriff’s office continues looking into every angle of the wreck.

Back in Syracuse the news moved fast. Family and friends of Todd felt the hit right away. A quiet Nebraska community suddenly had one less familiar face on the roads.

The investigation remains open. No charges have been mentioned. Only the hard fact that one driver lived and the other did not.

Todd Dorn’s name now sits on the list of people lost to a country road crash that should never have happened.
