It was supposed to be a morning of gifts and celebration for a local teenager turning fifteen. Instead, Saturday turned into a nightmare on Bennett Street when a sudden fire broke out right before dawn. By the time help arrived, the flames had already taken over the home, turning a quiet neighborhood street into a scene of complete loss.
The young boy who died in the morning blaze was identified as Connor Vest. Luzerne County Coroner Dion Fernandes confirmed the tragic news later in the day. Making the loss even heavier for the family and neighbors, the tragedy happened on the exact day Connor was celebrating his 15th birthday.
Outside the charred remains of 264 Bennett Street, the local community started gathering almost right away. People left colorful flowers, heart-shaped balloons, and small toy Hot Wheels cars near the front of the property. A simple wooden cross stood in the middle of the growing memorial, bearing a handwritten message: “Connor — never forgotten.”
The fire did not just claim Connor’s life. A household pet also died in the flames, adding to the pain felt by those who knew the family. Three other residents who were inside the house managed to get out, but they suffered severe injuries. Emergency crews rushed all three of them straight to area trauma centers for urgent medical treatment.
The trouble started around 5:49 a.m. when Officer Chris Vecchi was driving on his regular morning patrol through Luzerne Borough. Spotting heavy smoke and thick flames coming from the residence, he pulled up immediately. Recognizing the danger, he began pounding on doors and waking up people inside 264 Bennett Street while moving quickly to get neighbors out of two adjacent houses.
Local emergency crews backed up the officer within minutes. Firefighters from the Luzerne Volunteer Fire Department arrived alongside several neighboring fire companies to tackle the blaze. Crews worked fast under tough conditions to knock down the flames and keep the fire from spreading down the block, while paramedics focused on getting the injured residents into ambulances.
Right now, state and local authorities are still trying to figure out what started the blaze. Fire investigators from the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal unit are working on scene alongside local police to look through the evidence. Luzerne Borough Police Chief Dan Duffy expressed the town’s deep sadness, saying their hearts go out to the family dealing with such a terrible loss.
