Amanda Karolkiewicz was the kind of person who made everyone around her feel seen and appreciated. As a frequent substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary, students and staff knew her as a warm, patient presence who always went out of her way to lend a hand. But on a quiet Friday morning, her life and the lives of her six children were cut short in a tragic murder-suicide that has left the entire town grieving.
Firefighters first rushed to the family’s home on Riverside Trail near 148th Avenue and Mercury Drive after emergency calls came in about heavy smoke. When crews pushed their way inside to fight the flames, they made a horrific discovery. Amanda, her six young children, and her husband Kristopher were all dead inside, along with the family’s pets.
Investigators with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed that autopsies showed all eight family members died from gunshot wounds. Officials determined that 47-year-old Kristopher shot his wife and their children before taking his own life. To make matters worse, evidence showed that the fire had been deliberately set in multiple spots around the house after the shootings occurred.
The loss of the six children has hit local schools particularly hard. The kids ranged in age from just 5 to 15 years old, including a 5-year-old boy, an 11-year-old boy, two 11-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy, and a 15-year-old boy. Two of the children had been adopted into the family, building what friends described as a close-knit household filled with energy and laughter.
Classmates remembered the children as funny, caring, and full of life. At school, one of the boys was known as the kid who could instantly light up a room and make anyone laugh when they were having a tough day. Neighbors said the kids were always playing outside and brought so much joy to the block.
On Sunday evening, dozens of heartbroken students, neighbors, and friends gathered at Duncan Woods for a candlelight vigil. People hugged, shared stories, and cried together as they tried to make sense of something so awful. Grand Haven Area Public Schools Superintendent Kristin Perkowski expressed deep sorrow for the family, stating that the entire school community grieves alongside everyone affected by the loss.
As police continue their investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy, local leaders have made grief counselors available to students, teachers, and neighbors. For a tight-knit community that loved Amanda and her kids, the road ahead will be long, but people are leaning on each other as they honor eight lives lost far too soon.
