Late-night highway travel on a weekend is usually quiet, but early Saturday turned into a nightmare scene in Fairfield County. State troopers were called out to a horrific head-on collision on U.S. Route 33 that left one person dead and another badly hurt in the hospital.
The emergency call came in around 12:44 a.m. near Mile Post 5 in Violet Township. Dispatchers scrambled local first responders to the area as reports confirmed two vehicles had smashed into each other at highway speeds. When emergency crews pulled up, they found a crushed sedan and a heavily damaged pickup truck blocking the roadway.
Investigators with the Ohio State Highway Patrol quickly started putting together the timeline of events. They determined that 28-year-old Bailey Johnston was operating a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. Her vehicle was heading westbound, but it was traveling in the eastbound lanes against oncoming traffic.
Cruising in the legal direction was a 21-year-old male driving a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado. With almost zero warning in the dark, his truck collided directly into the front of Johnston’s oncoming car. The violent collision left both vehicles wrecked and locked together in the middle of the highway.
Deputies from the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office and firefighters from the Bloom Township Fire Department stepped in immediately to secure the crash site. First responders worked under emergency lights to assist the victims and clear hazardous debris from the eastbound lanes of Route 33.
Tragically, officers pronounced Bailey Johnston dead at the scene due to the severity of the crash. The 21-year-old driver in the Chevy Colorado sustained serious injuries and was rushed by paramedics to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. His current medical update has not yet been publicly released by authorities.
