It was supposed to be just another normal Monday night in rural Michigan, but everything changed in the blink of an eye on a quiet stretch of dirt road. Marlee Jo Alexander, an 18-year-old resident of nearby Manistee, was out driving late on July 27 when tragedy struck without warning. What began as a routine drive ended up leaving an entire community completely heartbroken and searching for answers.
Out on the unpaved stretch of Countyline Road, just west of Red Apple Road, things went south real fast around 10:31 p.m. Marlee was behind the wheel of her 2001 Saturn passenger car heading westbound through Grant Township. Dirt roads around these parts can be tricky to navigate even for local folks who know them like the back of their hand, especially after sunup turns to total darkness.
For reasons investigators are still trying to pin down, Marlee suddenly lost control of the Saturn on that loose gravel. The small car began sliding sideways across the lane before skidding completely off the roadway into a deep ditch on the south side. The momentum carried the vehicle straight into a tree, hitting it with devastating force.
Emergency calls flooded dispatchers right away, prompting local first responders to rush out into the night to reach the scene. First responders from the Grant Township Fire Department and Life EMS raced to the crash site alongside deputies from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. The Tribal Police with the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians also stepped up to assist with the intense scene.
When rescue crews got to the crash site, the severity of the wreck was painfully clear to everyone there. Despite the fastest efforts of emergency medical personnel, the young driver suffered severe fatal injuries from the heavy impact. Right then and there on the quiet roadside, Marlee was pronounced dead by officials.
Sheriff Kim C. Cole later confirmed the details of the crash, bringing terrible news back to the tight-knit town of Manistee. Local investigators have kicked off a full investigation to figure out exactly what triggered the sudden loss of control. Was it speed, a sudden slick spot, or something popping out in front of the car? That is what law enforcement is working hard to determine.
Now, a dark cloud hangs over Manistee as family, high school friends, and neighbors wrap their heads around losing such a bright young life way too soon. Folks throughout the county are sending up continuous thoughts and prayers, clinging to one another as they navigate these tough, dark days together.
