An 88-year-old bicyclist died late Sunday afternoon after a sport utility vehicle struck his recumbent bike on West Washington Street in Bloomington. Emergency crews responded to the scene around 5:05 p.m. in the 1900 block, where they found the rider lying near the road.
McLean County Coroner Kathleen Yoder pronounced Wayne W. Fisher dead shortly after first responders arrived. Preliminary findings from the coroner’s office indicate Fisher died from multiple blunt injuries sustained during the impact.
Fisher was riding a recumbent bicycle when the vehicle hit him. These specialized bikes sit much lower to the pavement than standard bicycles, placing the rider in a reclined position close to ground level.
The crash happened along a busy stretch of West Washington Street during late afternoon traffic. Bloomington police closed off the 1900 block for several hours while officers mapped out the scene, measured tire tracks, and cleared roadway debris.
Standard toxicology tests are pending, which officials noted is standard procedure in all fatal traffic accident investigations across McLean County. Authorities have not yet stated how fast the SUV was traveling at the time of the impact.
Law enforcement officers have not released the identity of the person driving the SUV. Police have also not stated whether the driver will face traffic citations or criminal charges related to the crash.
The Bloomington Police Department and the McLean County Coroner’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the incident. Authorities ask anyone who witnessed the crash on West Washington Street to contact local detectives.
