Bloomington police officers and traffic crash specialists are investigating a Sunday evening collision that left an 88-year-old cyclist dead on West Washington Street. Dispatchers received calls about the crash around 5:05 p.m.
First responders arriving at the 1900 block of West Washington Street located the victim, Wayne W. Fisher, near his damaged recumbent bike. Paramedics treated Fisher at the scene, but he died from his injuries before he could be transported to a hospital.
McLean County Coroner Kathleen Yoder officially pronounced Fisher dead at the crash site. Coroner Yoder confirmed that preliminary autopsy results list multiple blunt force trauma as the direct cause of death.
The collision involved a single sport utility vehicle that hit Fisher as he rode along the roadway. Investigators spent the evening taking measurements, evaluating vehicle damage, and documenting road conditions in the area.
Routine toxicology testing remains pending through the coroner’s office as part of the official fatality review process. Officials expect those results to take several weeks to process.
Authorities have withheld the name of the SUV driver involved in the crash. Police have not indicated whether distracted driving, excessive speed, or environmental factors contributed to the fatal collision.
