Driving a massive semi-tractor trailer along Highway 30 on a clear Monday afternoon seemed like another routine haul for Taylor Manley. That changed in a split second just outside Sutherland when an eastbound pickup truck crossed the center line right in front of his westbound rig. The ensuing crash destroyed the light truck and launched Manley’s 18-wheeler off the highway in a chaotic rollover.
The collision happened right at the junction of Highway 30 and Highway 25 around 2:05 p.m. The driver of the GMC Sonoma, 75-year-old James W. Ward of rural Hershey, veered into oncoming traffic without warning. Manley had only a fraction of a second to react as the small pickup struck the front end of his heavy tractor-trailer.
The violent force of hitting the smaller truck threw the heavy semi off balance. The rig tipped sideways, tore across the highway shoulder, and slammed down hard onto its side. It did not stop until the top of the trailer crushed the back end of a passenger car parked on a nearby private yard right next to the roadway.
When dust settled over the wreckage, observers on the scene feared the worst for anyone near the crushed vehicles. Miraculously, the owner of the parked car was not inside it, avoiding injury. Manley was able to pull himself out of the overturned rig, walking away with nothing more than minor cuts and scrapes after an evaluation by emergency medics.
For the driver of the pickup, the collision proved fatal. Lincoln County sheriff’s deputies and local rescue squads arrived within minutes, but Ward was pronounced dead at the scene due to trauma from the crash. Law enforcement officers quickly cordoned off the intersection to secure evidence and direct rural traffic away from the scene.
Because a commercial truck was involved in a fatal crash, the Nebraska State Patrol sent specialized crash reconstruction experts to assist Lincoln County deputies. Officers inspected the braking systems, tire marks, and debris patterns along Highway 30 to retrace the precise sequence of events leading up to the crash. Inspectors also examined the semi-tractor to ensure all mechanical systems were functioning properly before the impact.
Authorities continue to investigate why Ward’s vehicle strayed from its lane on a straight section of road during daylight hours. Sheriff’s deputies shared their sympathies with the Ward family as local residents process the tragedy. The investigation remains active as state and county officials compile their final accident report.
