James Witter, Fox Township: Risky Passing Maneuver Triggers Fatal Four-Car Chain Reaction on Route 71

Impatient driving on a two-lane state highway led to catastrophic consequences in northern Illinois on Friday night. Just south of Walker Road in Fox Township, a driver made a high-risk attempt to overtake several cars at once. That split-second decision on Route 71 set off a violent chain reaction that altered multiple lives forever.

​Around 9:15 p.m., a southbound Chevrolet Impala pulled into the oncoming lane to pass a line of traffic. The vehicle swerved directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle, causing an unavoidable head-on collision between a pickup truck and an SUV. The sheer speed and sudden impact left no time for either driver to take evasive action.

​The initial head-on crash immediately involved two other surrounding vehicles in the immediate traffic lane. Metal debris, shattered glass, and disabled cars quickly blocked both sides of Route 71. In total, four vehicles were swept into the pileup, leaving five motorists trapped inside crushed metal frames.

Three passengers traveling from Des Moines, Iowa, died from their injuries, including 38-year-old Amy Lee Whitter, 65-year-old James Witter, and a 4-year-old girl. Two other drivers and passengers involved sustained serious injuries requiring prolonged medical care.

​This deadly crash was actually the second fatal head-on collision caused by improper passing in Kendall County that same week. Local authorities have grown increasingly concerned over drivers taking dangerous risks on dark two-lane country roads. Passing multiple vehicles at night leaves zero room for error when oncoming lights suddenly appear.

​State police reconstruction teams worked late into the night, keeping Route 71 closed near Walker Road until 5:00 a.m. Saturday. Investigators gathered physical evidence, vehicle data, and witness accounts to build a full picture of the collision. The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of how fast a risky pass can end in absolute ruin.
