Derrick Harvey was riding his mini motorbike down a dark Texas road late Sunday evening when a sudden impact from behind cut his life short at age 41.
The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. along Farm-to-Market Road 1155, right near Washington Bridge Road. Emergency crews from the Washington Volunteer Fire Department rushed out after receiving reports of a bad collision, but there was little they could do once they arrived.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Justin Ruiz, a 2016 GMC Terrain was traveling north on FM 1155 when it ran into the back end of Harvey’s small bike.
The force of the hit threw Harvey off the bike and straight into the windshield of the GMC. He suffered heavy injuries and died right there on the pavement before medics could take him to a hospital.
Harvey lived in Washington County. News of the wreck hit hard among his family members, friends, and neighbors who knew him around the local area.
State troopers investigating the crash noted that visibility was likely a major factor in the wreck. The small bike had no reflectors on it, and Harvey was not wearing a reflective vest or bright clothing on the unlit stretch of road.
The driver of the SUV was not hurt and stayed at the scene to talk with investigators. Texas DPS troopers are still looking into all details of the crash, though they do not suspect speed or alcohol played any role.
