Bar Asraf was thirty years old. He was found dead Saturday at the grave of Liron Barda in Elkana. She was twenty-six when she died. Israeli reports said he died by suicide. This happened almost three years after the attack that killed her.
Liron worked as a bartender at the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. Hamas gunmen attacked the event that day. Her family said she stayed to help the wounded. Her father had told her to run. She did not. She was one of hundreds killed there.
Bar kept close to Liron’s family after she was gone. He visited her parents often. He kept her memory alive in the years that followed. Friends and relatives said the two had been close for a long time.
The Nova festival sat near Kibbutz Re’im in southern Israel, close to the Gaza border. The attack was part of the larger assault that day. Hundreds of people at the festival died. Others were taken hostage. Many who lived through it still carry deep scars.
Authorities have not given more details about how Bar died. No further findings have been shared in public. The family learned of it after he went missing from a family gathering earlier that day.
Elkana sits in the central West Bank, west of Ariel and about twenty-five miles east of Tel Aviv. The grave is there. Bar had gone to it many times before.
Survivors of that October day and the people close to them continue to face hard days. The weight of what happened has not lifted for everyone.
