A local school community is grieving today after a sudden tragedy on a rural Indiana highway took the life of a popular educator. Kaley D. Barnes was driving home on a routine Wednesday afternoon when everything changed in an instant. Her unexpected death has left friends, coworkers, and students in complete shock.
Barnes was 43 years old and served as the assistant principal at Lincoln Elementary School. She was known around the halls for her deep dedication to the children and staff. Those who worked alongside her remember a woman who gave her all to her school every single day.
The crash happened just south of town shortly before 5 p.m. on State Road 9. The highway sits about 25 miles southwest of Fort Wayne and runs through quiet farmland. Barnes was heading southbound in the passing lane as normal traffic moved along the route.
Up ahead, a semi-truck pulling a flatbed trailer began making a left-hand turn onto County Road 100 South. The heavy rig stretched across the roadway as it executed the maneuver. For reasons investigators are still trying to confirm, Barnes did not see the turning truck in time to stop.
Her vehicle struck the rear of the flatbed trailer with heavy force. Emergency crews rushed to the scene within minutes after witnesses called in the accident. Despite their quick efforts, Barnes suffered fatal injuries right at the spot of the collision.
The Huntington County Sheriff’s Office and the local coroner were called to investigate the crash. The coroner officially ruled her death as accidental. Authorities confirmed that the driver of the semi-truck was not hurt in the impact.
