The heartland of Labette County lost two bright souls on a warm Wednesday afternoon. Ryan J. Myers was 38 years old and lived right in Altamont. Samantha A. Cahow was 30 and lived just down the road in Parsons. When news spread that a terrifying head-on collision took their lives on U.S. Highway 59, time seemed to stand still for both towns. Neighbors and loved ones were left clutching memories of two people who meant the world to them.
It was roughly 3:10 p.m. when the afternoon peacefulness shattered. Ryan was riding his 1999 Harley-Davidson XL883 motorcycle northbound along U.S. Highway 59. Samantha was riding right behind him as his passenger. They were about two miles northeast of Altamont, navigating the familiar asphalt under the open Kansas sky.
According to state troopers, something went wrong as the motorcycle traveled north. The Harley suddenly drifted left, crossing over the yellow center line directly into oncoming traffic. In a tragic instant, the bike moved straight into the path of a southbound 2020 Jeep Gladiator.
The driver of the Jeep, 55-year-old Shaun T. Powell from Fort Scott, saw the motorcycle heading toward him. In a desperate move to avoid an impact, Powell yanked his steering wheel hard to the right. But the distance was simply too short and the closing speed was too fast. The two vehicles slammed into each other head-on with catastrophic force.
The violent impact threw both Ryan and Samantha off the Harley-Davidson. Emergency medical crews and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers rushed to the scene. Tragically, there was nothing first responders could do for the pair. Both Ryan and Samantha were pronounced dead right there on the highway.
Investigators later noted that neither Ryan nor Samantha was wearing a protective helmet or eye gear during the ride. Over in the Jeep Gladiator, Shaun Powell suffered suspected minor injuries, while his 27-year-old passenger, Lucas A. Kelley, walked away completely unharmed. Both men in the pickup had their seat belts securely fastened.
As state troopers continue to piece together the exact details of the crash, family members and friends are choosing to hold onto the light Ryan and Samantha brought into their lives.
