It was supposed to be a routine drop-off on a quiet Monday morning in Southwest Philly. Talyia Bernice Nesmith had just pulled up in a rideshare around 3:30 a.m. along Elmwood Avenue. She stepped out onto the street, ready to head home. Seconds later, a life filled with purpose was cut tragically short.
Talyia was only 29 years old, a young woman known by everyone around her as a bright light. She spent her days caring for elderly people and children with disabilities. Her mother described her as someone who simply loved people with her whole heart. That kind of devotion made her a cherished fixture in her community.
As she stepped off the curb near the 7200 block of Elmwood Avenue, she started to cross the street. She had no way of knowing that a dark car was flying down the road at a dangerous speed. Before she could make it to the other side, the speeding vehicle slammed directly into her.
The force of the crash was devastating. The impact threw Talyia through the air, sending her crashing into a parked vehicle before she landed at the intersection of Elmwood Avenue and South Lloyd Street. The driver who hit her didn’t stop, didn’t check on her, and didn’t even slow down.
First responders rushed to the scene and hurried Talyia to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Emergency medical staff worked quickly to try and save her life. Sadly, her injuries were far too severe. She was pronounced dead at 4:05 a.m., just half an hour after the crash.
Back home, her family was left in complete shock and heartbreak. Her mother, Lakisha Nesmith, begged for answers, unable to wrap her head around how someone could strike a human being and just keep driving. She remembered her daughter as a wonderful soul whose future was wiped out in a single careless instant.
Now, a neighborhood is left mourning a young woman who dedicated her life to helping others. Friends, family, and neighbors are keeping her memory alive while waiting for justice. They refuse to let Talyia become just another statistic on a city street.
