Fourteen-year-old Vanessa Morales was getting everything set for her freshman orientation at Palatine High School on Monday. She was excited, nervous, and looking forward to starting her high school journey like any kid her age. But she never got the chance to walk through those doors. Early Sunday morning, her life was cut short in a horrific accident on the South Side.
Around 2:15 a.m., the pickup truck Vanessa was riding in flew off the Cicero Avenue bridge near 69th Street in Bedford Park. The vehicle crashed directly into a freight train box car sitting in the railyard down below. The impact was devastating. Three teenagers died right at the scene, while emergency crews rushed Vanessa to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, where she later passed away.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the four young victims who lost their lives in the crash. Alongside Vanessa from Palatine, the crash claimed the lives of 18-year-old Yuaren Garcia-Pena and 19-year-old Christopher Lopez-Montan, both residents of Woodstock, as well as 17-year-old Yaritza Martinez-Villeda from Crystal Lake. Four suburban teenagers from three different communities were gone in an instant.
The chaotic chain of events began earlier that night when Chicago police received a emergency call reporting that someone inside a car was pointing a gun at another driver. Officers located a pickup truck matching the description and attempted to pull it over. Instead of stopping, the driver hit the gas and fled down the avenue.
Police officials said officers started a pursuit but called it off shortly after due to safety concerns. A short time later, Illinois State Police troopers spotted the exact same pickup near the 5500 block of South Cicero Avenue and tried another traffic stop. The driver briefly pulled over to the side of the road before suddenly speeding off southbound again.
State troopers radioed that the truck was fleeing, and Chicago police officers joined back into the chase. Driving at high speed down South Cicero Avenue, the pickup driver lost control near 69th Street. The truck launched off the bridge and crashed onto the train cars parked in the railyard beneath the overpass.
In the painful hours after the wreck, Vanessa’s heartbroken father spoke out and pointed the finger straight at law enforcement. Speaking in Spanish, he told reporters that he believes police share heavy responsibility for the deaths. He said officers told him directly that they had stopped chasing the truck, but videos circulating online tell a completely different story.
Her father noted that online video clips clearly show multiple police cars trailing right behind the pickup moments before it went over the ledge. He insisted officers should have handled things differently, arguing there were much safer ways to stop a vehicle without driving teenagers over a bridge. Chicago police and state police say the incident remains under investigation, but for four families, no investigation will ever bring their kids back home.
