When 24-year-old D’Sean Jones made his way to Martinsville over the weekend, nobody thought it would be his final trip anywhere. He was young, full of energy, and loved by so many people back home in Danville. But early Saturday morning, everything changed in a matter of seconds.
It was around 4:14 a.m. when the peaceful silence of the neighborhood was shattered by gunshots. Calls came flooding into emergency dispatchers reporting gunfire in the 400 block of Fayette Street. Officers rushed over immediately, unsure of what they would find in the dark.
When police arrived at the scene, they found D’Sean lying on the ground, hit by gunfire. Despite quick efforts to help him, he died right there from his injuries. For his family and friends, receiving that phone call in the middle of the night was an absolute nightmare.
D’Sean was not the only one caught in the crossfire that morning. Officers found an adult woman at the scene suffering from bullet wounds. Shortly after, a second woman walked into the emergency room at SOVAH Health Martinsville with gunshot injuries from the same incident.

Martinsville Police Chief Chad Rhoads confirmed the tragic details and noted that investigators are working around the clock. Detectives closed off Fayette Street between High Street and Peters Street to comb the pavement for evidence and talk to potential witnesses.
As two surviving women recover from their injuries, a heartbroken community is coming together to lift up D’Sean’s family. Loved ones are holding tight to memories, sharing stories, and leaning on each other as they wait for justice to be served.
