Late Friday night, a quiet stretch of Baughman Hollow Road in Hempfield became the site of a fatal single-vehicle motorcycle disaster. Rylie D. Hillegas, 24, of Greensburg, lost his life after losing control of his bike on a dark winding section of the road. Local authorities were alerted to the scene just minutes before midnight as emergency crews scrambled to respond.
According to public reports from Westmoreland County Coroner John Ackerman, Hillegas was riding his 2002 Harley-Davidson Dyna Wide Glide eastward. The crash unfolded about 150 yards east of Pandora Way, right near the spot where Route 66 passes over Baughman Hollow Road. The area is known locally for its tight curves and unforgiving shoulders.
As Hillegas entered the curve around 11:47 PM, his Harley failed to make the turn. The motorcycle veered off course and struck a metal guiderail along the edge of the asphalt. The impact threw Hillegas violently from the machine, leaving him lying severely injured in the roadway while the bike came to a halt nearby.
Emergency medical personnel arrived swiftly and loaded Hillegas into an ambulance, rushing him directly to Independence Health System Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg. Emergency department doctors immediately took over care upon arrival, but his injuries proved far too severe. An ER physician pronounced him deceased at 12:29 AM on Saturday.
Coroner Ackerman confirmed that Hillegas was traveling alone and was the only person involved in the accident. The coroner’s report highlighted that Hillegas was not wearing a helmet when the crash took place. Officials note that the lack of head protection was a major factor in the severity of the outcome when he was thrown from the bike.
At this stage, the official cause and manner of death are officially listed as pending. Coroner Ackerman explained that final determinations will be made following the completion of comprehensive autopsy and toxicology reports. These tests are standard protocol in fatal traffic crashes across Pennsylvania to rule out mechanical or medical factors.
Two separate law enforcement agencies have teamed up to conduct a thorough inquiry into the fatal crash.
