Fifty-eight-year-old Michael B. Adams was just trying to get where he was going on a warm Tuesday evening. The Brooklyn native was cruising up Interstate 85 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, taking in the open highway. Nobody expected that a routine summer drive would turn into a nightmare in a matter of seconds.
It was right around 6:30 p.m. on July 28 when things went terribly wrong. Michael was behind the wheel of a sleek 2026 Hyundai Kona, heading northbound near the Route 58 exit. The weather was clear, and traffic was moving along normally like any other weekday evening.

Without warning, the car suddenly drifted off the right side of the interstate. The vehicle launched off the shoulder and went completely airborne over a patch of grass. Bystanders and passing drivers could only watch in shock as the SUV flew off the pavement.
The Kona came down hard in a grassy area right beside the tree line. It smashed straight into several large trees before violently rolling over onto its roof. Metal crumpled, glass shattered, and the peaceful evening was shattered by the sound of the violent crash.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene within minutes of the crash calls. Troopers found Michael inside the wrecked vehicle, still buckled into his seat belt. Despite wearing his safety belt, the impact was just too severe, and he suffered fatal injuries right there at the scene.
Riding in the passenger seat was an unidentified woman who also had her seat belt on. Emergency medical team members pulled her from the twisted metal and rushed her to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Doctors and medical staff immediately went to work to save her life.
Back home in New York, family and friends are left grieving the sudden loss of Michael Adams. Meanwhile, Virginia State Police are trying to figure out what caused the car to leave the road in the first place. For now, a quiet stretch of Virginia highway marks the painful spot where a Brooklyn man lost his life.
