State troopers in Connecticut are continuing their search for answers following a fatal crash in Franklin on Tuesday. A Chevrolet work van crossed over into oncoming traffic at a busy intersection, striking a 29-year-old motorcyclist. The incident left local authorities working around the clock to figure out exactly what went wrong.
The crash happened at roughly 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of Route 207 and Pautipaug Hill Road. Investigators report that the driver of the Chevrolet work van was traveling eastbound when things took a deadly turn. The van drifted out of its lane and entered the westbound lane while trying to make a right turn.
Austin Leigh Lippincott was riding his Kawasaki motorcycle westbound along Route 207 at that exact moment. He had already begun executing a legal left turn when the work van moved into his path. Austin had virtually no time or room to react before the heavy vehicle hit him.
The violent collision tossed Austin off his bike and onto the roadway surface. First responders from the Connecticut State Police and local emergency medical services rushed to the location right away. They found Austin with catastrophic injuries and began immediate emergency care.
Paramedics transported Austin directly to Backus Hospital in Norwich for urgent treatment. Despite the best efforts of emergency doctors and nurses throughout the evening, Austin succumbed to his injuries later Tuesday night. The tragic outcome turned a serious traffic investigation into a fatal accident inquiry.
As of now, state police officials have not publicly released the identity of the work van driver.
