Texas state troopers are piecing together what led to a fatal rear-end crash on a dim rural road in Washington County late Sunday night.
The wreck occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Farm-to-Market Road 1155 near Washington Bridge Road. A driver in a 2016 GMC Terrain was heading north when the vehicle struck the back of a mini motorbike travelling in front of it.
Texas DPS Sergeant Justin Ruiz reported that the collision threw the bike rider, identified as 41-year-old Derrick Harvey, directly into the windshield of the GMC.
First responders from the Washington Volunteer Fire Department arrived quickly at the scene, but Harvey died from his injuries before he could be moved.
The driver of the GMC Terrain was uninjured in the accident, immediately pulled over, and remained at the site to cooperate fully with law enforcement officers.
Preliminary findings by DPS investigators show that neither speed nor driver impairment contributed to the crash. Instead, officers point to severe lighting issues, noting the mini bike lacked rear reflectors and Harvey was wearing no reflective gear on the dark roadway.
Troopers are continuing their review of vehicle equipment, road conditions, and evidence from the scene as they decide whether any citations will be issued.
