Franceska Warick from South Elgin, Illinois, was found in the water Monday after the weekend search near Washington Island. The 20-year-old set out on kayaks with her friend David Thalman from Dundee. They headed out Saturday evening without life jackets, and the rough conditions on Lake Michigan took them both.
Emergency crews responded at Wickman Drive around 6:48 p.m. A big multi-agency operation kicked off fast. Drones and boats searched the area while fire departments from nearby towns pitched in. The U.S. Coast Guard joined the water hunt overnight and into Sunday morning. Operations shifted to recovery on Sunday, and by Monday morning the team located Thalman first at 10:55 a.m. Warick’s body turned up shortly afterward.
The families of both young people are reeling. The Door County Sheriff’s Office offered its deepest sympathies and said the full picture of the incident is still under investigation. Crews from the Washington Island Police Department, Gibraltar Police, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources worked around the clock to bring the bodies back. “Our thoughts are with the families during this difficult time,” the office said.
The lake near Washington Island doesn’t forgive mistakes. Going out without life jackets on a busy stretch like this one puts anyone at risk, especially when the wind picks up or the waves build. Authorities are still digging into every detail to understand what led to the tragedy.
