The Sutherland District Athletics Club and NSW Athletics had to put out another hard statement on Thursday, July 30. Natasha Ward, their 21-year-old middle-distance runner from Sydney, had died. No cause was listed. The clubs just said she was a greatly loved part of the group.
Ward raced the 400, 800 and 1,500 meters. She medaled at NSW All Schools as a junior. At Macquarie University she studied exercise and sports science and kept competing. In April she took bronze in the 800 meters at UniSport Nationals. A year earlier she had medaled in the 1,500.
She lined up at the 2024 Australian Championships against Morgan Mitchell and Claudia Hollingsworth. Her club remembered her showing up for summer and winter relays and helping fill gaps when teams were short. Teammates said her drive rubbed off on the people around her.
Nathan Breen called the news devastating and offered condolences to her family. Others who crossed paths with her away from the track talked about the same kindness. The clubs noted her enthusiasm left a mark that does not fade quick.
Just weeks before, Jemma Stapleton, another 25-year-old Australian athlete, died in a motorcycle crash while vacationing with her family in Thailand. Two young runners gone so close together left the wider athletics circle quiet.
Authorities and the clubs have shared no extra details on Ward’s death. The circumstances stay private. Sydney, the big city on Australia’s southeast coast, is where a lot of the country’s track talent trains and races. Right now that community is sitting with the loss of one of its own.
The clubs ended their message by saying their thoughts stay with Ward’s family and everyone who knew her. For the runners who shared the track with her, that is what remains.
