David Simpson walked out of the Mecklenburg County Jail at 12:21 a.m. Wednesday after posting bond. Less than 90 minutes later police say he shot two men outside the Charlotte apartment complex where he lived.
The bond was for failing to show up in court on an old charge of having a weapon while he was a prisoner. He went home. By 1:45 a.m. officers were on the way to a shooting call at his complex.
One man died right there. The other was hit and survived. Neither name has been released.
Police say it started with a fight over a parking space. Officers had already shown up at the complex twice that night for the same beef.
Surveillance video is key, investigators claim. It shows Simpson go inside after words were exchanged. He comes back out with a black bag that looked like it held something heavy. Gunfire follows. Then he walks back in with the bag.
He is charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Girlfriend Shameka Scott faces an accessory after the fact charge. Police say she helped him leave the scene. She made a $30,000 bond and was released.
Simpson’s record goes back more than ten years. A 2013 murder charge ended with a plea and about five years behind bars. He has been arrested multiple times since. The investigation continues.
