A stretch of U.S. 77 in El Dorado turned deadly before most folks woke up Sunday.
Just after 2:18 a.m., a southbound car driven by Luke Hargadine of Wichita crossed the center line for no clear reason. It entered the left-turn lane and smashed into a northbound vehicle.

Hargadine, 35, died at the scene. The crash happened right inside the city limits in Butler County.
The woman behind the wheel of the second car, age 47, was flown out with serious injuries. Her 76-year-old male passenger landed in critical condition at a hospital.
Kansas Highway Patrol officers worked the wreck under dark skies. They still search for what made that southbound car leave its lane.
Two people cling to life while one man is gone. The probe continues with no answers yet on the cause.
Road crews cleared the wreckage as morning traffic started to build. The questions linger over that early-hour collision.
