A local woman died Saturday afternoon when a runaway trailer smashed straight into her truck on New Point Comfort Highway. The sudden crash took a neighbor’s life and brought an immediate end to a popular local treat spot that folks had visited every summer for eight years.
The trailer belonged to TURBOs Snowballs, a small shaved ice business well known around Mathews County. The owners were hauling their equipment to work when the hitch gave way. The loose trailer drifted out of control and slammed head-on into a 2002 Ford F-250 pickup.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene shortly after 1:13 p.m., but the woman driving the Ford died right there on the road from her injuries. Police have not released her name, but her loss hit the small town hard. People who live nearby knew her as a friendly face in the area.
The family running TURBOs Snowballs posted a message on social media later that day. They said they were completely crushed over what happened on their way to work. They told the town they are closing the shaved ice stand for good because nobody can think about selling treats after such a terrible event.

Virginia State Police troopers stayed on the highway for hours working out how the trailer came loose. They confirmed that the truck pulling the stand was a 2023 Chevrolet 2500. The driver, 61-year-old Donald Turbin, was taking the rig down the road when the attachment failed completely.
Troopers ended up charging Turbin with driving an uninspected trailer and failing to secure his load properly. As the police investigation continues, folks across Mathews County are sending prayers to the woman’s family and holding each other close after a normal Saturday turned into a nightmare.
