It was supposed to be just another humid Wednesday evening in Georgia, the kind where folks settle in after dinner as dark rain clouds gather overhead. But for 68-year-old Bobbie Pettiford, a sudden turn in the weather brought an unthinkable tragedy right to her front door. Around six in the evening, a massive tree tore loose from the soaked earth and crashed straight down onto her Bretton Woods Road home in DeKalb County.

Inside the quiet residence, Bobbie was simply going about her usual evening routine. Neighbors in the suburban pocket were listening to the heavy rumble of thunder and the hard patter of rain outside. Nobody could have guessed that a towering tree in the yard was about to snap under the weight of high winds. Within seconds, the heavy timber caved in the roof, crushing the exact spot where Bobbie was staying.

Emergency calls came flooding into dispatch right after six o’clock as neighbors heard the terrifying impact. When DeKalb County Fire Rescue units pulled up to the scene, they found a heartbreaking sight waiting for them. The enormous trunk had crushed the middle of the house, leaving a mangled wreckage of shattered timber, shingles, and snapped utility wires.

First responders moved fast to search the scene, but they quickly realized the immense danger of the situation. The force of the falling tree had ruined the structural integrity of the entire home, making every step inside a risky move. Heavy wood and shifted walls threatened to collapse further if firefighters tried to move through the house without proper support.

Crews worked carefully around the heavy timber, knowing that Bobbie was likely trapped beneath the rubble. They believed she was the only person inside at the time of the storm, which made every minute feel even heavier for the rescuers on site. Despite their best efforts to reach her quickly, the massive size of the trunk delayed their ability to perform a complete search right away.

Once responders stabilized the wreckage enough to make a safe entry, they confirmed the news everyone feared. Bobbie Pettiford had passed away inside her home from the heavy impact. The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office officially identified her shortly after, bringing a solemn answer to a neighborhood in deep shock.

Officials are still reviewing the site to understand how the tree gave way during the evening storm. The medical examiner will conduct a full review to determine the exact cause of death for the local resident. For the surrounding community, the sudden loss of Bobbie remains a sobering reminder of how fast a summer storm can turn a peaceful home into a place of heartbreak.
