It was supposed to be just another quiet Tuesday afternoon in a neighborhood where folks usually leave their doors unlocked and wave from the front porch. But shortly before 4 p.m., a burst of sharp gunshots shattered the peace along Elliot Street and West Barivista Drive. Seconds later, a heavy impact shook the block as a dark SUV slammed straight into the side of a neighbor’s house.
The woman killed inside that car was 44-year-old Crystal Broadus, also known as Crystal Russ. To those who knew her best, Crystal was an absolute angel—a warm, deeply caring mother of four who put her kids above everything else in this world. She was the kind of person whose gentle presence made everyone around her feel safe and loved.
Those close to Crystal say she did everything right when her nearly ten-year marriage to William Eugene Broadus turned dangerous. Recognizing the rising threat at home, she took the legal steps necessary to protect herself and her children. She went to court and filed a Protection From Abuse order, hoping the legal boundary would give her the breathing room she so desperately needed.
For several days leading up to Tuesday, Crystal had been staying at a nearby hotel just to keep her distance and stay out of harm’s way. She was doing what any protective mother would do—trying quietly and bravely to build a safe exit route for her family.
But on Tuesday afternoon, that distance was broken inside an SUV. Police say the shooting happened right inside the vehicle before it veered off the road and crashed into the home. When emergency crews rushed to the scene, both Crystal and her husband were found dead inside.
